Advance CLASS Statement About the Release of the
AARP Public Policy Institute Costs of Caregiving Study

The AARP Public Policy Institute study "Valuing the Invaluable: The Growing Contributions and Costs of Family Caregiving, 2011 Update” points up the dramatic need for quick and effective implementation of the CLASS Program. The study concludes that American families provide $450 billion worth of care to their adult parents and other loved ones in 2009. Families bear this burden nobly, but this cannot be sustained as the baby boom generation enters retirement and will need care.

“The CLASS Program, a new long term services and supports option in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), will provide essential financial relief to families in crisis,” said Connie Garner, executive director of  Advance CLASS. “We look forward to working with the Obama Administration on implementation that provides an important benefit to American families.

 About Advance CLASS

Advance CLASS is the premier national advocacy organization dedicated to the implementation of a strong and vital long-term services and supports program. The group is an independent 501(c)(3) organization, comprised of prominent national organizations who specialize in serving the most vulnerable in both the aging and disability communities. This "big tent" group is eager to expand, further, and include a variety of stakeholders including diverse providers of care, and companies who specialize in delivery of crucial services.

In light of the sweeping changes enacted under health reform, which include the CLASS Act, it is important that long-term supports and services, education, and benefits be promoted to the highest extent and fully integrated into the U.S. Health Care System.
