Washington, January 6, 2011—Yesterday, Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced her intent to open the doors of the Office of CLASS within the Administration on Aging (AoA). This decision is the first step in helping millions of Americans overcome barriers to independence.

The effective administration of this voluntary, long-term care insurance benefit will support people with disabilities across the life span by giving them financial access to the services they need to live and participate in the workplace and in their communities.

Advance CLASS also commends the Secretary for designating Assistant Secretary of Aging, Kathy Greenlee, as the Administrator of this program. Her insurance expertise and commitment to issues affecting seniors and individuals with disabilities has long been demonstrated, and her leadership will be invaluable to the success of this program.

The CLASS Act is intended to provide greater dignity, greater hope, and greater opportunity and self-direction to seniors and people with disabilities so they can maintain the dignity of a job, a home, and a family.

With the opening of the Office of CLASS, the Administration has taken the first step towards making this opportunity a reality.
